Professional Engineers – Requirements by State

Review the below list of requirements by state for how Professional Development Hours earned at Connected Plant Conference may count towards a Professional Engineers certification.

Alabama Professional Engineers

Alabama professional engineers are required to complete 15 PDH each year by December 31st.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Alaska Professional Engineers

Alaska’s professional engineers are required to complete 24 PDH by December 31 of odd numbered years.

A maximum of 12 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Arizona Professional Engineers

Arizona professional engineers are not required to complete PDH. Arizona professional engineer licenses are renewed every three years from the original date of licensure.

Arkansas Professional Engineers

Arkansas Professional Engineers are required to complete 15 PDH every year by December 31st.

California Professional Engineers

California professional engineers are not required to complete PDH. California professional engineer licenses are renewed every two years from the assigned renewal date.

Colorado Professional Engineers

Colorado professional engineers are not required to complete PDH. Colorado professional engineer licenses are renewed every two years from the original date of licensure.

Connecticut Professional Engineers

Connecticut professional engineers are not required to complete PDH. Connecticut professional engineer licenses are renewed annually.

Delaware Professional Engineers

Delaware professional engineers are required to complete 24 PDH every two years. 3 PDH must be related to professional ethics (no more than 6 PDH can be related to professional ethics). No more than 9 PDH can be related to business or project management. Delaware professional engineer licenses are renewed every two years on June 30.

Florida Professional Engineers

Effective March 1, 2015 Florida Professional Engineers are required to complete 18 hours of continuing education to renew their licenses every 2 years. Of the 18 hours, 1 hour must be related to the laws and rules of professional engineers, 1 hour must relate to professional ethics, and the remaining 16 hour can relate to any topic pertinent to the practice of engineering. Georgia Professional Engineers

Georgia engineers must complete 30 PDH by December 31 of even numbered years.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Hawaii Professional Engineers

Hawaii professional engineers are not required to complete PDH. Hawaii professional engineer licenses are renewed every even numbered year on April 30.

Idaho Professional Engineers

Idaho requires engineers to complete 30 PDH every other year.

A maximum of 30 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Illinois Professional Engineers

Illinois engineers are required to complete 30 PDH by November 30 of odd numbered years.

Hours cannot be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Indiana Professional Engineers

Indiana professional engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every two years. One PDH must be Ethics related. One PDH must be in Indiana statutes and laws. Indiana professional engineer licenses are renewed every two years on July 31.

Note: Indiana professional engineers can take courses from PDH Academy that have been approved by the AIA. These courses contain “AIA” in their course number.


Iowa Professional Engineers

Iowa engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year ending on December 31st.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Kansas Professional Engineers

Kansas engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year by April 30th.

A maximum of 30 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period, except that no carry-over hours are allowed for the first reporting period.

Kentucky Professional Engineers

Kentucky engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year by June 30th.

Louisiana Professional Engineers

Louisiana Professional Engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year (on March 31st or September 30th). 1 PDH must be in ethics and 8 PDH must be in Life Safety Code, Building Codes and/or ADA Guidelines.

Maine Professional Engineers

Maine engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year ending on December 31 of odd-numbered years.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Maryland Professional Engineers

Maryland professional engineers are required to complete 24 PDH every two years. One PDH must be on the topic of engineering ethics. Maryland professional engineer licenses are renewed every two years based on the date of original registration.

Massachusetts Professional Engineers

Massachusetts professional engineers are not required to complete PDH. Massachusetts professional engineer licenses are renewed every even numbered year on June 30.

Michigan Professional Engineers

Michigan professional engineers who have held a license between 12-24 months are required to complete 15 PDH for their first renewal. Michigan professional engineers who have held a license for more than 24 months are required to complete 30 PDH every two years. Michigan professional engineer licenses are renewed every even year on October 31.

Minnesota Professional Engineers

Minnesota professional engineers are required to complete 24 PDH every two years. 2 PDH must be on the topic of engineering ethics. Minnesota professional engineer licenses are renewed every even year on June 30.

Mississippi Professional Engineers

Mississippi professional engineers are required to complete 15 PDH every year. 1 PDH must be on ethics training every two years. Mississippi professional engineer licenses are renewed every year on December 31.

Missouri Professional Engineers

Missouri engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year by December 31st.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Montana Professional Engineers

Montana engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year by June 30 of even-numbered years.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Nebraska Professional Engineers

Nebraska engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year by January 1st.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Nevada Professional Engineers

Nevada engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year.  The deadline is January 1 or July 1, depending on your last name.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

New Hampshire Professional Engineers

New Hampshire engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year based on your month of birth and year of initial licensure.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

New Jersey Professional Engineers

New Jersey professional engineers are required to complete 24 PDH every two years. 2 PDH must focus on the topic of professional ethics. New Jersey professional engineer licenses are renewed every two years.

New Mexico Professional Engineers

New Mexico engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year by December 31st. 4 PDH must be in ethics.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

New York Professional Engineers

New York Professional Engineers are required to complete 36 hours of continuing education every 3 years. Of the 36 hours, 18 must provide for direct interaction with an instructor. The remaining 18 hours can be obtained through educational activities from a board approved sponsor. One PDH must be on the topic of engineering ethics. We are approved by the New York State Board of Engineering and Land Surveying as a continuing education provider (NY Sponsor #158).

North Carolina Professional Engineers

North Carolina professional engineers are required to complete 15 PDH every year. North Carolina professional engineer licenses are renewed annually on December 31.

Note: PDH Academy is not currently an approved provider for professional engineers in North Carolina.


North Dakota Professional Engineers

North Dakota engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year by December 30th.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Ohio Professional Engineers

Ohio engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year by December 31 in odd years.

Board policy only allows for a maximum of three (3) hours continuing professional development per year for the completion of correspondence courses (paper, online, or other formats) provided the course and the course provider meet the requirements.

Oklahoma Professional Engineers

Oklahoma professional engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Oregon Professional Engineers

Oregon professional engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Pennsylvania Professional Engineers

Pennsylvania engineers are required to complete 24 PDH every other year by September of odd years.

A maximum of 12 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Rhode Island Professional Engineers

Rhode Island professional engineers are not required to complete PDH. Rhode Island professional engineer licenses are renewed every year on June 30.

South Carolina Professional Engineers

South Carolina engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year by June 30th of even years.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

South Dakota Professional Engineers

South Dakota engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year.

Tennessee Professional Engineers

Tennessee engineers are required to complete 24 PDH every other year.

A maximum of 12 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Texas Professional Engineers

Texas engineers are required to complete 15 PDH every year, including 1 PDH of ethics.

A maximum of 14 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Utah Professional Engineers

Utah engineers are required to complete 24 PDH every other year by December 31 of even-numbered years.

A maximum of 12 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Vermont Professional Engineers

Vermont professional engineers are not required to complete PDH. Vermont professional engineer licenses are renewed every even year on July 1.

Virginia Professional Engineers

Virginia engineers are required to complete 16 PDH every other year.

No hours may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Washington Professional Engineers

Washington professional engineers are not required to complete PDH. Washington professional engineer licenses are renewed every two years depending on the original date of licensure.

West Virginia Professional Engineers

West Virginia engineers are required to complete 15 PDH every year by June 30th.

A maximum of 8 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Wisconsin Professional Engineers

Wisconsin engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year by July 31 of even-numbered years.

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

2 PDH must be in the area of ethics and a minimum of 13 PDH must be in a classroom or webinar (interaction with an instructor).

Wyoming Professional Engineers
